As I type this message my eyes are filled with tears and my heart is breaking.
Our 9 1/2 yr old Collie was diagnosed with diabetes in April of this year. As a family of 4 with 2 boys ages 9 and 12, we took it fairly hard as we hadn't heard about diabetes in pets before. Lucky started his insulin injections once per day, the day after the diagnosis.
It took him approx. 2 weeks to get into the regular routine of getting his "pokey thing" early in the morning. The hardest thing for him was to be only fed at regular times. He was use to eating whenever he felt like and loved to eat late at night.
He has done fairly well through out the summer, with only a few "ups and downs". We have felt like we've been handling his diagnosis well until the past 2 weeks....
His hearing has now gone and he is completely deaf. He cannot see at night. His water consumption has drastically increased again, and he's just not Lucky. He growls when we hug and pet him as if he's in pain, and he's been laying around sleeping for most of the time. He has spurts when he seems to be happy, but those rapidly diminish and you can see that he's not. Our hearts have been heavy the past couple of days, as we all "know" that it's a matter of time.
Our vet told us just this afternoon that Lucky most likely has a tumor in his pancreas.
We are saying Goodbye to Lucky on Thursday, even though we're no where ready too. He's had a good life, and we are blessed to have had him in our family. He's brought alot of joy, giggles and many many great memories.
Lucky will be missed by many and never ever forgotten!!!
