As I type this message my eyes are filled with tears and my heart is breaking.

Our 9 1/2 yr old Collie was diagnosed with diabetes in April of this year. As a family of 4 with 2 boys ages 9 and 12, we took it fairly hard as we hadn't heard about diabetes in pets before. Lucky started his insulin injections once per day, the day after the diagnosis.

It took him approx. 2 weeks to get into the regular routine of getting his "pokey thing" early in the morning. The hardest thing for him was to be only fed at regular times. He was use to eating whenever he felt like and loved to eat late at night.

He has done fairly well through out the summer, with only a few "ups and downs". We have felt like we've been handling his diagnosis well until the past 2 weeks....

His hearing has now gone and he is completely deaf. He cannot see at night. His water consumption has drastically increased again, and he's just not Lucky. He growls when we hug and pet him as if he's in pain, and he's been laying around sleeping for most of the time. He has spurts when he seems to be happy, but those rapidly diminish and you can see that he's not. Our hearts have been heavy the past couple of days, as we all "know" that it's a matter of time.

Our vet told us just this afternoon that Lucky most likely has a tumor in his pancreas.

We are saying Goodbye to Lucky on Thursday, even though we're no where ready too. He's had a good life, and we are blessed to have had him in our family. He's brought alot of joy, giggles and many many great memories.

Lucky will be missed by many and never ever forgotten!!!

Oh, I am so very sorry to read about Lucky's illness and your family's pain over this news about a possible tumor. I do not know if there is still any hope that Lucky's life may be extended. But I strongly encourage you to take a look at our "sister" forum: k9diabetes.com. Even though we do have a few dogs here who suffer from diabetes in addition to their Cushing's Disease, the folks at k9diabetes.com are super knowledgeable and really focused on all aspects of canine diabetic management. And it is possible that they may have some thoughts or suggestions that may be able to buy Lucky a bit more time. Here is a link to their discussion forum:

Once again, I am so sorry that Lucky is doing so poorly and that you are faced with this hardest decision of all. But just as he has blessed your lives, it sounds as though Lucky is also so blessed to be loved by you and your family.

Sending many hugs to you and your sweet boy,
Marianne

I'm so very sorry your Lucky boy is so sick.

Is your vet sure he has a tumor?

Most diabetic dogs receive insulin shots every 12 hours. The insulin most of them are on doesn't last more than 12 hours.

I hate to even ask you questions because you sound like you love your dog very very much and this is so very hard. Do you think a second opinion would be worthwhile?

big hugs to you and your family and Lucky Boy.

Judi
