Hello All,
What a comfort to know that you are here for others. My 11 y/o Maltese/Bichon was recently diagnosed with Cushings. She had Atypical for a few years, now typical. Her alk/phos is through the roof even though she's on 30 mg. of Trilostane. Doc thinks results were wrong so I'm redoing. Going to get her on a holistic program soon. Does anyone know what to give her for liver function? Is Dennamarin (spelling?) the best or is something else better? I am so heartbroken for I see her aging and pretty rapidly. I miss my best friend and all the things we used to do together. It is so depressing...please, if anyone has ANY words of wisdom/advice I'd appreciate it. Thank you so much. Patricia

Hi and Welcome,
I am glad you found your way here. Sharing information, caring and great support and much knowledge is found on our forum.:)
A ritual though is to ask a million questions:D
How much dose your pup weigh? What symptoms led you to the diagnosis? What tests have been done other than the University of Tennessee adrenal panel which must have originally brought you to the atypical diagnosis?
If you could list any abnormal results from recent blood work as well as what the normal value should have been, that would be great.
My Zoe started Trilostane 7 weeks ago and is doing well.
Others will be along soon to help answer your alk/phos questions.
I love maltese/bichons:D:D:D Can't wait to see a picture of yor pup.
Hang in there Patricia.
Hugs,
Addy

Hi Patricia,
Corky and I also want to welcome the both of you.
A cushings diagnosis can be devastating, but it can be treated. If it is adrenal cushings, surgery is the best option, if a furbaby is a good candidate for the surgery. Our members are very caring, supportive and knowledgeable, and they have alot of experience.
Milk Thistle and SAM-e have been used by some of our members to help the liver. Cushpups typically have elevated liver enzymes.
Corky was diagnosed with cushings over 2 1/2 years ago, but has had it for at least 3 years. He's 14, and has been treated with Trilostane for 22 months. He had all of the classical symptoms, but when he started his treatment, the symptoms did go away, and he became his normal self again. Some symptoms take longer to disappear.
Take it one day at a time. Please feel free to ask questions. It really helps to get as much information as you can. We have a good resource section. Also, as Addy said, it would really help our members to provide more input if you could post what tests were done to make the diagnosis of cushings, along with the abnormal test results with the reference ranges.
Hang in there. We're here to help in anyway we can.
Hugs,
Terri

Hello Terri and Addy...you are wonderful people...thank you so very much for your kindness and advice. I will post the results tomorrow. They are at home. However, the last chem may be incorrect as per my Internist. She says that b/c her alk phos was 2,800 before the Trilostane now is just under 4,000. Blood sugar said "1" which raised suspicion of error. Yes, Univ. of Tennessee gave the Atypical diagnosis. Looking back, that was a much easier one to deal with. Will get results tonight and post tomorrow. Bless you my new friends...your babies are precious! Going to post my girl's pic right now.
Hi Patricia,
Welcome from me and and Hannah. Hannah was diagnosed in March and is on Anipryl, as her symptoms were pretty mild, so I can't offer any helpful information about Trilostane. I can relate to your feelings though, as it seems that Hannah has aged and slowed down recently.
Cushing's can definitely be confusing, and it can also be quite an emotional roller coaster. The good news is that many, many people have successfully treated their dogs (as you will see on this site) and they seem to return to their normal, pre-Cushing's selves. I hope this will happen for you and your pup.
As you have probably seen, there is a wealth of information on this forum, as well as tons of wonderfully knowledgeable, helpful, caring people. You have come to the right place for support and information!

Hello. I've been expecting you for quite some time.
Here, come sit beside us for awhile .
and let me tell you about this old friend of mine.
She might look tattered or maybe old
But I won't say goodbye until you've been told.
She had the brightest eyes I had ever seen,
And wore a beautiful fur coat that would out shine a queen .
She was never prissy but walked with an aire ......
And oh so polite, you could take her most anywhere.
She could run like the wind and could catch anything she chased
But she protected and sat with me when I had problems to face.
You could not find a friend nearly so dear.
Because no matter the trouble she always stayed near...
She has never asked for much from me;
Just to love and respect her and I think you'll agree .
To give her a good meal plus a nice warm bed is not much to ask
When she has given me all her love and to her this was no task.
Now I understand you have a schedule to keep.
But I have a small favor before she nods off to sleep.
Please fold your wings around her and let her feel young while in no pain.
Dear Guardian Angel of Pets,
please keep her safe and happy until I see her again.
