Hi there, Welcome to the forums. :) It's a nice place here. Lots of helpful kind people with very helpful ideas and stories.

I am fairly new here, but Cod Liver Oil is one source. Why do you need to supplement with Vit D? I ask bc its contraindicated in some cases, can be toxic, etc.

Hi,

Food sources for Vit D are limited, especially for dogs. The best sources are fatty fish like tuna, mackerel, and salmon. If your baby can tolerate dairy products, some of this vitamin can be found there as well.

Vit D sources for dogs are best found in high quality feed as it is fortified with essential vitamins and minerals. If you are feeding a good feed, then supplementing with Vit D is not necessary, or particularly a good idea. An excess of Vit D causes the colon to absorb excess calcium which has to be deposited somewhere - like in the heart and lung tissues. It can cause kidney damage and cause stones to form in the kidneys. Excess can cause disorientation, confusion, nausea, constipation, weight loss as well. So unless your baby has a known deficiency, it is best not to supplement this particular vitamin.

Hugs,
Leslie
