omg.......I had no idea that was still even around much less that NM sees 30+ cases a year in cats and dogs! :eek:

I'm gonna stop freaking out over tape worms now....:D

Ladies, this is not new. I lived in NM until I was 32 years old. They have quite a few cases of plague reported in things like ground squirrels, rabbits, & the like on a yearly basis. It is kind of unusual for a dog to get it, but there is even usually 1-2 cases of humans contracting plague in NM every year. This is why you will hear warnings constantly not to handle any sick or injured wildlife, or dead animals.
