This is such a huge blow to the veterinary community and those of us who have come to admire and respect Dr. Oliver. We should all be so lucky to leave such an amazing legacy and to have touched the lives of so many, both human and canine. He will be sorely missed.

Thanks Glynda for letting us know.

I agree with Debbie. We should post a collective though on his page for our group.

He helped so many many of us, which he had never met. I was just amazed how someone of his standing always had the time to answer my
e-mails. Usually the same day!

He is the reason why I believe Snoop got put on the best medication for her and she is thriving! No doubt in my mind he saved her life.

My parents live across the river from UT and I am going there this month. I was planning on dropping in and thanking him personally for his dedication and time spent with all of us.

Godspeed...Dr. O.

Love,
Rene & Snoopie

I am so shocked and saddened. Dr. Oliver was so dedicated and answered all questions right away. It always amazed me that a man of his stature would take time to talk to us all.

This is a huge blow, as Glynda has already stated.

I am just shocked by the news.

Rest in peace, dear Dr. Oliver and thank you for all your patience and concern and ground breaking work on behalf of the pups. You will be missed so very much.

I'm surprised and saddened to read about this. :( He was very helpful when I sent my Mandy's blood-work down to UTK. One of the few doctors, I felt, who gave me a pretty objective, unbiased opinion of the situation. Definitely a loss.

Thanks to Debbie's suggestion, the k9cushings.com staff has now posted this note in Dr. Oliver's guestbook on behalf of the entire membership:

We at K9cushings.com will be forever grateful for Dr. Oliver's keen mind and his generous spirit. Over the years, he personally answered telephone calls and replied to countless emails from our members worldwide -- always with such helpful information, always with compassion, always for the sake of our dogs, always signed simply and humbly "Regards, Jack." He was such a kind and learned man. We shall miss him terribly. On behalf of all our dogs who he saved and on behalf of all our lives that he touched, we send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Thank you, Dr. Oliver, and Godspeed.

I'm so sad to learn of his passing. I still have email replies from him that I have saved on my computer, and it brings tears to my eyes to re-read them today. He was such a kind man, and made such an effort to try to help everybody who contacted him. We owe him a great deal, and I'm going right now to light a candle for him on our special site. In honor of Dr. Oliver. Such a special man.

Thank you Marianne for your wonderful tribute from all of us. He will be truly missed. I remember when I joined this site a few years back and was amazed that there was a vet out there who researched and personally helped so many people and their pets. A wonderful man.

Dr. O saved Squirt's life; I will always credit him with that. He was the one who recommended she have that second ultrasound after which I was told about the tumor on her spleen. If he had accepted the first one, she wouldn't be here today. He has been a part of our Cushing's journey since her first UTK panel - talking with me and our vets willingly, always explaining in language I could understand, always gentle and kind, his compassion shining through.

Although he never saw my Crissy Ann, he saved her life back in 2004. He will be greatly missed. He was the 'expert' on atypical Cushings'.

I know what you mean, Bonnie. He never saw Squirt either but I have always considered him a member of her vet team. :(

Sending love and positive vibes your way. That was really nice of you to stop by Dr Oliver's office with a note. xoxo Kim

Thank you Kim...very sweet for you to say.

I just wanted to share this with you all.

Many of us were blessed with sharing correspondence of some type with Dr. Oliver. I experenced his patience, gentle way and grace first hand. While visiting family in TN last week, I went to his office drop off a note and photo. It was not surprising to find that his surroundings reflected his good nature.

Dr. Oliver's office is located in a building on the Tennessee riverfront boardwalk. It has a view across the river of the UT Medical Center, which is a beautiful facility. Adjacent to his building there is a gorgeous large garden.

When I saw that garden, I pictured Dr. Oliver strolling about taking in the riverfront, thinking of ways to save our cush pups...

Dear Rene,

Thank you so much for sharing your visit to Dr. O's office. I've made a copy of your reply posted on your own thread so as to also place it here. It was so thoughtful of you to stop off at his office, and your description brings a smile to my face. I am so glad that such a nice man had such a beautiful space within which to do his important work.
