This is Dog Bite Prevention Week and Dr. Sophia Yin, Jack's behaviorist, is actively participating in efforts to educate people about how to approach (and to choose not to approach) dogs to help people and their kids avoid being bitten.

She has also written a blog post about why bites occur and how to prevent them.
Dogs Bite When Humans Greet Inappropriately (http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dog-bite-prevention-dogs-bite-when-humans-greet-inappropriately)
In the interview with a local news crew posted in her blog article, she did a great demonstration of how we treat dogs and then wonder why they react badly. She just walked up to a child and did all of the things we tend to do to dogs we've never met - grabbed her cheek, scruffed her on the head, gave her a tight hug... Imagine if a total stranger walked up to you and did those things!
Last weekend, I was at a local restaurant/pub. Two women tied a dog up just outside the door and went in to order their food. While they were inside, two other women stopped to talk to the dog on their way out and that poor dog exhibited all of the fearful behaviors shown in Sophia's PSA up to the point of growling and biting. After putting her ears back and dropping her head, she slunk as far away as she could from the visitors, who thankfully took the hint and left her alone before she had to take her defenses any further. Unfortunately, her human seemed to have no idea that the dog was stressed by strangers and being tied up in that environment. I have worried about that dog every day since.
So please share this information with anyone you know who is unaware of the dangers signs in their dog and/or in others' dogs.
