Hi everyone, my name is Kelly and I have a beautiful and wonderful 12yr. old cocker/beagle mix named Q who was diagnosed with Cushing's about 8 months ago. She is on Vetoryl and it seems to just manage her symptoms. The medicine is so expensive, but I love my dog, so I will do whatever I have to for her. She now has arthritis in her back leg and Deramaxx and Medicam made her sick and now the vet is suggesting Tramadol. Has anyone ever used Vetoryl and Tramadol together?

Welcome, Kelly & Q. We haven't had any real experience with Tramadol but there are others who have. They will be along shortly to help. Just wanted to welcome you into our family.

Hi Kelly and welcome to you and Q.
Yes, I believe there are a number of members who have used Tramadol and Vetoryl together. Both of my cushdogs took Tramadol short term for pain after major dental procedures. We have had a number of members who have had good results with adequan injections so perhaps you might want to talk to your vet about that.
When you say the Vetoryl "just" manages Q's symptom, does that mean that you've seen improvements but her symptoms haven't totally resolved? How much does Q weigh, what dose is she currently on and can you post the results of the last stim test for us? Do you know what form of cushing's she has (pituitary or adrenal)? Sorry for launching into twenty questions but we'll be able to offer more meaningful feedback if we have a good understanding of Q's history.
I'm sorry for the circumstances that brought you here but I'm really glad you found us. It sounds like you may have a pretty good handle on things but we're here to help in any way we can.

It is so nice to meet everyone, I am so happy to have found you guys, to know that I'm not alone with this diagnosis for my dog, my baby. Q is currently taking 60mg. of Vetoryl, she has to go in for another test, so I'll keep you updated with the results as soon as I take her in. She weighs 40lbs. which is about 10-12lbs heavier than what the vet would like. She had the excessive thirst and hunger, the panting, the urine that smelled like burning rubber, I kept saying I thought she had Cushing's, but I guess I was in a little denial, then I took her for the low-dose dex test and it was confirmed. Q has the pituitary tumor(non-cancerous,thank goodness!). I do not have any children, my 2 dogs are my life, and Q has never once given us a day of trouble, no accidents in the house even though she always has to urinate, she has such a sweet demeanor, I hate knowing that she has this, but I'll do whatever it takes to keep her healthy. Thanks so much for letting me go on and on, it's just such a relief to be among those who understand.

Hi again,
I don't have two legged kids either so my dogs are my kids. I have four dogs, two of which have cushing's. You aren't alone in this anymore and as luck would have it, you found the best hand holders in the world right here. The experience and reference material isn't bad either. :D
If you don't have copies of the testing your vet did to diagnose or the acth stim tests that have been done so far, be sure to collect those from your vet and share them with us. That way, we'll have a complete history for Q and you will too. Most of us keep a folder for our dogs with all medical records. This comes in handy if you ever have to go to an emergency clinic. Vets on call sure do love to have a dog's up to date history at their fingertips. Of course, those test copies also come in handy when we bug you to post the results. :D

I can't thank you all enough. It's funny, I'm a licensed social worker in Phila. and my friends always say-"you care more about animals than you do people!' I just love my dogs (and cats) and when I find others like yourself who feel the same, it is so great. I will get the test results and post them as soon as I get them, I know the first test was all day, and then the next test was two hours and it did show some improvement, so I am grateful for that. I just don't have the figures at hand, but i'll definitely let you know.

Welcome
As far as Vetroyl being expensive , I have attached a few sites.
Go on the Internet to find a better price, make sure it is a reputable company. Others will be along to recommend some other sites.
We do what we need to.

As far as the medications for arthritis , I am not familiar with any. If they have steroids/cortisone in them they may be causing your baby to be ill. Talk to your vet about this.

Hi Kelly and Q,
Just wanted to welcome you both :), and to suggest asking your vet/IMS about maybe using glucosamine for Q for her arthritis.
