I had to drive to Sanford, FL today for work (about 40 mins from Daytona). On the way back after getting back on SR46, which is a 4 lane highway, I came across a beautiful Husky on the side of the road with a collar and tags hanging. After finding a place to park I got out trying to get to the pup before he ran into the road. I was unsuccessful I was too far away to get to him before he tried crossing. He made it safely to the other side barely. Meanwhile I'm running through a muddy wet field, I then manage to cross over myself only to see him jump into a small pond. I tried calling to him but he wasn't moving. My next thought was to lose my shoes and go in after him. I decided I would try walking away some and see if he would come out. As I walked away he started moving to get out. So I doubled back around and snuck around so he wouldn't see me. Finally he stopped looked at me and I just walked up slowly and in a small crouch talking sweet to him. He sniffed me and let me pet him with a small grumble (not growling) coming from him. Almost like he was talking it was sweet. He let me put my hand under his collar and he walked back with me to my work van. He got right up into it. At this point I started looking at his tags, found the vets number off the rabies tag and called. They were able to locate the owner and had them call me. I met up with him and handed over this beautiful pup who stole my heart and had my shoes full of water and mud. The owner was very happy and grateful he said they had been looking for him since last night and had thought they would never see him again. His name is Prince and I managed to take a pic of him with my phone while we were waiting.
Here it is.

Here is to show you that no good deed goes unpunished though. I got a hefty speeding ticket on the way back from lunch today...

Ahhhh dang!!! But Melissa, I also believe that no good deed goes unrewarded, even if it is just to enrich the spirit...:o So sometime now or in the future, when you least expect it or perhaps do not even recognize it -- your act of kindness will come back full circle. That is not why you did it, of course. But I do believe that life is full of circles that end up being completed.
What a beautiful and VERY lucky doggie (and set of owners)!!

I feel like I'm already blessed. With Rebel doing so well it was the least I could do to help another pup mom and dad. I could tell as soon as I saw him he was no stray and I had to help him. I had to call the boss and let him know why I was so late getting back too, but he was cool about it. The owner tried to give me a reward, but I refused. All I needed as a reward was to see his smile and his pups tail wagging. It's amazing how quick they can steal your heart, I cried after leaving him but they were happy tears..

What a wonderful and courageous thing you did, I mean, Holy Cow, running across a busy highway and then tracking, without shoes  in a wet, muddy field!! No doubt, you've made Prince's family very, very happy today.
Love and hugs,

Lol, I had shoes on. I just got them full of water and mud. My last resort was to take off my shoes and go in the pond after him, but I gave the I'm walking away not looking at you a try first. Something just pulled me to this pup. I can't explain it. I just knew he had a home and family and needed help. Right place at the right time.

It was still very courageous, running across a highway  plus trying to get close to a pup that you don't even know.

I just wonder how many people drove right past Prince and thought nothing of it...YOU, dear Melissa, were Prince's earth angel today.

Thanks I appreciate it. Honestly I never gave a second thought about running across the highway..lol I did start thinking twice when he started letting me get closer. It didn't dawn on me until I could almost touch him that he might bite!
He was so sweet though once I got to him. I could tell he was tired and being a husky out in our heat he was overheating.
I'm glad I could be there. All I kept in my head was what if it were one of my pups, what would I do to help them.

I absolutely love it. Everything. You and your muddy shoes , the dog saved:D, the owner happy to have him back:). A very good and worthwhile deed you pulled off today. If only everyone could do the same!!!!
I just get heartsick when I see dogs roaming along interstates or at rest stops. I've tried to catch more than one in that situation, but failed. At least I have saved a couple in more residential locations. But just so so happy that you were successful today. Highways and dogs - BAD BAD COMBO. Sue
