A similar thing happened a few miles from our place a couple of summers ago.
When out walking with (little 9 - 10lb) Mia I used to carry some of that alcohol hand cleaning stuff, partly for hand cleaning if necessary (it happens!) but also because if a python where to grab her it could be persuaded to let go by the application of a bit of the alcohol to the nose and eyes. It is a sure fire way to make a snake let go and get going apparently - it's what they use in zoos etc in emergencies.
Of course, I never had to use it but we did meet snakes that were certainly big enough on a couple of our walks. This is on suburban streets, BTW.
A friend has a rural place that is teaming with snakes, including at one point a very large python. I never took Mia there but if I had she would have been either inside or in my arms the whole time!:eek::eek:

Depends on the situation and what I have on hand but the snake would not win!

I'm thinking that this lady must have longish fingernails. You can't deal with a snake that size using brute force (no matter what your adrenaline levels) - your only hope is to either kill it out right or to persuade it to want to let go. I've heard of people biting the snake (a guy in Africa got grabbed by a giant python and that is how he got free) so the pain of being dug with fingernails would probably make the snake think twice too.

Oh, I cannot even imagine her panic!
I once rescued a squirrel from a cat and to show it's appreciation the squirrel promptly bit through my thumb finger nail. I then had to take the very injured squirrel to the vet to be tested for rabies and euthanized. That doesn't mean I wouldn't do it again! :-D

what ever it took to save my baby. Years ago a vicious dog came at us in front of my garage. I held Apollo up as high as I could in his harness to keep the dog from attacking him. Only thought about his safety. That's what we dog parents do .
