Hi, my 10 year old rescue dog, Bubbles, was just diagnosed with pituitary Cushings last week. I will need to make a decision soon on whether to consult a specialist, and which treatment to start. Bubbles' other symptoms are the heavy water drinking, frequent urination (although she has not had accidents) and some decreased energy. My current vet suggested Lysodren, but I am reluctant to go this route because Bubbles has had a history of having a sensitive stomach. Of course we're not sure of Bubbles breed, but she looks like a norwegian elk hound or sheppard mix - currently weighs about 53 lb. - up from a more normal weight of 48 lb. Ironically, Bubbles has actually been shedding much less - noticably so - not that we mind that!:) Would appreciate any suggestions on next steps. Thanks so much.

Hi and welcome to you and Bubbles.
In a hurry here, but just wanted to add that it is always a good move to use a specialist if you have an option. Perhaps your current vet and the specialist would work together to give Bubbles the best care.
Is your vet recommending a specialist?
Will check back later and hang in there.

Hi and welcome from me too.
Firstly can you let us know what tests were performed to come to this diagnosis. Please post the results here. Keep in mind there are other conditions that mimic the cushings symptoms you mentioned.
Here is a link to our Resources section which contains a load of information on cushings and the treatments --- http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10
Is your Bubbles taking any meds for his sensitive stomach? What other type of med has your vet mentioned?
Keep us posted

Thank you for your replies. Bubbles (female) has actually done pretty well regarding her stomach recently - has never taken meds for this. She has also had thyroid issues for the last 6 years or so, and has taken .5 to .6 mg of thyroxine over the years - that was first investigated as a behavior/aggression issue, and definitely improved with treatment. I don't know the name of the test she took, but it was an 8 hour blood test measuring cortisol levels (I think I have that right.) And it was conclusive for Cushings. The vet has not mentioned a specialist, although she did say something about her consulting a vet internist. I do intend to keep reading up on this using the web site, but have been making several trips our of town recently, limiting my computer use. Thanks so much. Bubbles Mom
