I have a bichon frise that has Atypical Cushing's and she drinks massive amounts of water and pees allllll night long. And I was wondering if restricting the water intake would help? If not, what else could I do instead of taking away the water?
PLEASE help! I really really want her to be okay i love her to death, and i DO NOT want her to die yet. :(

Hi! My dog has pituitary cushings but you cannot restrict water. They are actually drinking excess water because their kidneys are working overtime and making them pee. So it is "reversed". They are drinking because they are peeing. IN other words, your dog needs that water.

Meanwhile - please tell us more about your dog's story, the symptoms, diagnosis etc. It will help us help you. How long have you treated for atypical cushings and what are you giving your dog? Melatonin, lignons, lysodren?

I'm glad you found us. Tell us all you can and we'll help all we can! Kim

Hi and welcome from me and my boy Harley! Kim is correct about not retricting the water, restricting her water could be lethal to your precious furbaby.

Other illnesses can cause our pups to drink and urinate excessively, has she been checked for diabetes or for a UTI lately? In the mean-time I suggest you buy those puppy-training pads and put some of those down for her to pee on, I have them for my boy and I love them.

We would really love to hear more about your pretty girl when you get the chance to tell us, we just love details...how much does she weigh, was she dx'd with the UTK full adrenal panel, what other tests were performed.

So very glad you found this forum and we are here to help you in any way we can.

Love and hugs,
Lori

Corky and I would also like to say hi and welcome both of you.

As has previously been said, please don't restrict her water intake. When Corky was drinking excessive amounts of water, I thought about restricting the amount of water I was giving him. Thanks to so many on this forum, I realized that I would be doing more harm than good.

Hi,

Please don't restrict water. However, the question is why is she drinking so much? How is her Atypical Cushings' being treated? It is not normal for a Cushings' dog to continue to drink excessive amounts. Has she been checked for diabetes? It is not uncommon for a dog to have both illnesses.

Hi and welcome to you and your baby girl! :)

Atypical, huh? My Squirt is Atypical as well. The usual, initial treatment for this form of Cushing's is not that expensive - melatonin and flax lignans. It can take several months for you to be able to see any real changes, tho, so if she has just started treatment her cush behaviors will still be present - like excessive peeing and drinking.

It is also possible that this is caused by something other than Cushing's, too, like a UTI, diabetes, hypothyroidism, to name a few. How long has it been since she was seen by her vet?

Do you have a copy of the actual test results? It would really help us to be able to see the hormone levels reported by UTK; then we will be able to give more meaningful feedback. ;) Don't worry about writing a book either...the more info the better and, like Lori said, we just love details! :p

As has already been said, but it is critical enough to bear repeating, please do not restrict her water. She is not peeing because she is drinking so much, she is drinking so much because the Cushing's causes her to pee so much. It is imperative that she have fresh water available at all times or dehydration is a real threat.

I look forward to learning more about you and your sweet girl soon. Hopefully, this whacky computer will allow me to visit with you from time to time! :D But regardless, I will be reading and keeping up with your story.

Keep your chin up!
Hugs,
Leslie and the girls - always

Hi thank you all for your help! And I am definitely looking forward to more help and I know that requires more information, but I have to ask my mom about it and as soon I get all the info, I will be sure to post it on here. That should be within the next few days!

Thanks! :)
