View Full Version : The Story of Maggie Possum Bane

Maggie has been gone for 7 weeks and it's time to tell her story. Much of it was on the other site but was lost.
Maggie came to us through a friend who had stopped and picked her up in the middle of a busy street. She took her to the vet and learned that the little beagle had been seen running loose in area for at least a month but no one had been able to catch her. Our friend invited my daughter and I over to see her newest rescue. I walked in, sat down, and was joined by a cuddly beagle. My friend said that several people had been by, but I was the only person the had gotten that response. So Maggie chose me and came to live with us.
We were inexperienced pet owners and found that we had a dog that would go nuts if we tried to crate her or leave her in a room with a closed door. She was extremely food aggressive. Just what happened to her before we got her we never knew. Our other dog, Benny, was 10 months old when Maggie came to us and she appointed herself surrogate mama. She cleaned his ears several times a day and if he protested, there would be a paw on his body to hold him down. The rest of the time she was my constant companion, following me everywhere. We learned to be careful about leaving food within reach. She jumped on a chair and then onto the dining room table where she grabbed a loaf of French bread and then she was off running through the house with me behind her trying to get it back. She caught one possum and ate it (much to our dismay) but the second one got away thanks to our intervention. Then there were the blocks of bird suet and seed and the messy aftermath followed by chocolate and anything she could nab from the pantry if we left the door open. I swore several times that the door was closed. Through this time, my Dad died, my job became unhappy, I had surgery but she was there. You could say we rescued her, but I think it's the other way around.

Oh Virginia, thank you so much for sharing Maggie's story! It is indeed a heartache that so many stories from cc.net have been lost to us. So we are very grateful each time a story is "returned." And in Maggie's case, you have returned her story to us in the form of such a sweet and loving tribute. So double thanks to you! :o
I am especially touched by the way in which Maggie knew to choose you as her forever mom. There is no rational way to explain either the connection or the gift -- but it is the heart that knows and understands everything perfectly. You were, and will always be, true companions of the heart.
And one more thank you, Virignia. Thanks so much for remaining here with us and posting your supportive notes to so many other members. Every time I read your kind words, I think to myself: "Oh, I know that Maggie is so proud of you..."
With many hugs, always in loving memory of your sweet girl,
Marianne

Hi Virginia,
You are absolutely correct...often we think we are doing the rescuing when in reality we are the ones being "saved." Maggie knew the moment she saw you, that you were the one who needed her...and she you. What better foundation for a perfectly loving relationship could there be?
Thank you so much for sharing some of her escapades with us. I can just see the two of you running through the house...Maggie delighted with the bread and the chase, thoroughly believing it was great fun for both of you!
I hope peace has begun to rest on your heart and soul.
Hugs,
Leslie and the girls - always

That was delightful. Maggie's photo shows she had lots of heart. I love the look of adoration in it. And I think she did find you on purpose... that story about the bread is hysterical. These are the memories that help us through the tough times and I am glad you shared them. Biggest of hugs, Kim

Virginia,
I peeked in yesterday and read Maggie's story and was so overcome by the "chowhound" in her that I needed some time to try and come up with something to say that would truly relay how I feel...and I still am falling so short but had to post something as you have always been here for me and I loved so much of Maggie's story both at the old site and here. Food slaves to these little ones we were...and we gladly became a slave to their love. I know we would both do it all over again if given the chance to have them back healthy and happy.
I do think Maggie chose you, you were her safe haven both in your heart and in your home...and what else can anyone ever ask for? I understand the part about them rescuing us because I felt that way so often. They save us I think from the darkest parts where no one else can reach.
Thank you for sharing Maggie's story here...I needed to read it again...and it made me think about how our pups will always be safe right here...both on this board and in our hearts...
Much love and many hugs, Beth

Virginia -- I'm so glad you re-told Maggie's story of how she came into your life. It's almost a year since my Maggie moved on to her friends at the Rainbow Bridge. I still miss her terribly (she was my sweetheart valentine for almost 14 years ...) but I take some comfort knowing that she is now able to show all her beagle friends, including your Maggie, the best places to find rabbits and all the other great smells!

Virginia,
What a beautiful story. Anyone that has rescued knows that they choose us and they give back so much more than we can give them as they know they have been rescued. It seems as if they never forget that. We finally realize that they were sent to rescue us.
We are so blessed to have them with us for as long as we do.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful story.

We never stop missing them. We learn to live without them, and we hold on to the love, but how can you ever stop missing someone so special?
Hope you finding more comfort in your days. There are many that share the road with you.
