Hi. I am new on this site. I have a 12 year old miniture poodle named Psycho that was just diagnosed with Cushings this past Saturday. I have looked so much up on the internet that my head is spinning. Our vet has never mentioned surgery to us. We are just starting him on Trilostane. I guess it has just been approved to be used in the USA. I just hope my baby isnt a guinnea pig! I have read about other medications that are a chemo therapy. Please tell me if this drug is what we should be giving him. I just want him better. I just lost my pomeranian four months ago and cant bear to loose another. What is the prognosis and life expectancy of a dog with cushings? Thanks Diana

Hi Diana,

Welcome to you and Psycho! First of all, I want to assure you that a dog that has been properly diagnosed and treated for Cushing's can live out a normal lifespan with its Cushing's symptoms well-controlled. Trilostane is one of the two medications that are very effective Cushing's treatments, and as you will soon see, we have many members here who are successfully using that drug.

It will help us a great deal, though, if we can find out more about Psycho and his health history. What prompted you to test him for Cushing's -- can you tell us about his symptoms and any previous health problems? Also, what tests were done to diagnose the Cushing's? When you have the chance, it will be great if you can actually list any related test results for us here. Also, how much does Psycho weigh, and what dose of trilostane are you starting him on? Sorry for so many questions, but your answers will help guide our feedback to you.

In the meantime, here is a link to a thread on our "Helpful Resources" forum that may answer a lot of your own questions about trilostane:

It is a lot of information for you to try to digest all at once, but as you sort through the different references, I think you'll start to get more of a "handle" on what is involved with trilostane treatment. And you'll also come up with questions of your own to ask us!

I'll go ahead and close for now. But once again, I am so glad that you have found us. I am so very sorry about the recent loss of your other little pup. It sounds as though you have had an awful lot to deal with, and we will be here to help you in any way that we can.

I want to second what Marianne said about how well Cushing's dogs can do with treatment. When correctly diagnosed and treated by a knowledgeable Vet who has experience in successfully treating and managing dogs with Cushing's, a Cushing's dog will usually live out a normal lifespan for their breed with an excellent quality of life.

My Bichon Frise dog was diagnosed at the age of 10 and he lived (well and happy) for another 6+ years after diagnosis under the care and supervision of our very wonderful Internal Medicine Specialist Vet, who knew all the ins and outs of diagnosing and treating Cushing's in dogs. We treated with Lysodren (also known as "mitotane"). After we got treatment started, all his symptoms disappeared and his lab test results all began to normalise too. He did so well that people couldn't even tell that there was anything wrong with him at all! :) We have members here who are still treating very sucessfully with Lysodren.

Vetoryl (also known as "trilostane") is a newer drug for treating Canine Cushing's, but it is also proving to be a very good and effective treatment choice and we also have people here successfully using trilostane to treat their dogs.

Here's a link to a specific post in our Resources forum that contains links that are especially helpful for people with newly diagnosed dogs:

Diana, welcome to you & Psycho!! I'm not a Trilo parent, but I did want to tell you that my first cushpup, Barkley, was successfully treated with lysodren for almost 8 years with a wonderful quality of life. He crossed the bridge at 15 due to a medical problem not related to his cushing's. Harley, my current cushpup, has been successfully treated with lysodren for almost 2 years. He was diagnosed at 13, & will be 15 in about 6 weeks. As Marianne has asked, please get copies of all of Psycho's labs & post those results for us. This just helps us to give you the most appropriate feedback from the group's collective experience.

Hi Diana,

Welcome to you and Psycho! :)

I have a little terrier mix that I often refer to psycho, but it is usually followed with the "B" word! :p

It has been my privilege to share life with 3 mini poodles and each left an unforgettable mark on my soul. They are some of the most intelligent and fun little pups around!

You have been given some great info and the question game has started so I won't add to the head spinning just yet! :D Just know that as you learn more and more the spinning will stop...well at least from time to time. ;) We are here to help you learn and to cope. You and Psycho don't have to take this journey alone, we will be with you every step of the way.

I am glad that you are here and hope to learn more as time passes.

Keep your chin up!
Hugs,
Leslie and the girls - always

Hi Diane,

Corky and I would also like to welcome you and Psycho.

You have found a wonderful group of people with alot of experience and a wealth of knowledge.

Corky is being treated with Trilo. He's been taking it for about 3 1/2 months. He has really been doing good on the Trilo. He has shown so much improvement. He's back to his normal self.

I wish you and Psycho the best and hope everything goes well.

Diana welcome from me and my cushings dog Casey - she is 14 and is doing wonderfully well after being diagnosed in February of last year. Trilostane was not available in Canada at the time she was diagnosed but she is doing very well on Lysodren.

I love the name of your dog by the way . . . . . I can tell you are going to get lots of comments on her (his?) name. Post a picture when you can,

Love and hugs,
