You gotta see this clip! Elephants carry their babies nearly 2 years, around 22 months, and this is the fruition of that incredibly long pregnancy.

Elephants are very communal, social, and almost human in some of their emotional (yes, emotional) reactions to life around them, especially within their own herds. As a matriarch approaches death, the whole herd will stay with her til the end, touching, petting, stroking her until her final breath. Then they all pass by and touch her once more in fare-well before they move on. I have seen several films of this display in the past, but never a birth. This is the beginning of a new life and it is clear that elephant mom's are just as emotional about this phase, even tho this occurred in captivity. As I watched this I went through a gauntlet of feelings, and I think you will as well.

Enjoy!

That was certainly a joy to watch, thanks Leslie :) It's truly amazing to see the mom desperately trying to get the baby to breath...

How are things on your end?

Hugs,
